Del Mar Foundation - Raising and Granting Funds

By Shelley Moore

The Del Mar Foundation's mission includes raising and granting funds. Traditionally community members send in their operating support through our biannual newsletter. These funds support the annual programs put on by the foundation but they also provide money for the grants that we make to other organizations.

The recent grant cycle resulted in grants to the Del Mar Hills and Del Mar Heights Schools. The Del Mar Foundation also made a $35,000 grant to the City for acquisition of the Shores School Site.

Grants have also been made to the Junior Lifeguard program, special needs of the Del Mar Lifeguards and San Dieguito Lagoon Bus Tours. Donations received become part of the operating funds which also provide help for individuals or groups of people who want to do something to make Del Mar a better place such as Community Connections, Keep Del Mar Clean, the Del Mar Library Wall, or the Friends of the Powerhouse.

Today the Del Mar Foundation has also created a new way of raising the funds for activities and grants, the Community Endowment. What is an endowment? It's a permanent "savings account" on which a nonprofit can dependably rely, thus enhancing its capacity to plan for the future. The Community Endowment was established by the Del Mar Foundation Board with 100% participation. The dream of the long term funding stability that will result from the Community Endowment means that when opportunities like the Train Station, Shores School Site or the Powerhouse present themselves, the Foundation will be ready to respond with significant grants.

Dedicated Board and Development Committee members are meeting with individuals who are interested in joining this visionary group of Founding Endowment donors. If you would like to set up a meeting to learn about becoming a Founding member please call or email me at 858-635-1363, Shelley@delmarfoundation.org.

The Del Mar Foundation also reaches out for specific support of our activities like our Summer Twilight Concerts. Hershell Price, is currently chairing the Foundation's effort to reach out to businesses interested in sponsoring the Concerts.

This series of free-to-the-community concerts has been extremely successful for many years, drawing locals and neighbors to Powerhouse Park for four fun-filled evenings during the summer months. For local businesses, sponsorship offers a wonderful opportunity to communicate your company's name to a large group of people while helping the Del Mar Foundation and our community ensure these concerts continue.

To learn more about how your business might sponsor the concerts, please call at 858-635-1363 or visit our website and click on "what we do/summer twilight concerts".
