THE VILLAGE VOICE
Building Community Through The Arts And A Bit of Bluegrass
By Shelley Moore
The Cultural Arts Committee of the Del Mar Foundation was formed in January 2000 with the purpose of bringing the community together through the arts. Every year, the "First Thursdays" series just seems to become more and more successful. I have had the pleasure of sitting in on the committee meetings which are run like a well oiled machine. As current chair of the committee, Claire McGreal's organizational skills and attention to detail help the "First Thursdays" events seem effortless.
Actually, as anyone who volunteers with a non-profit organization knows, it takes an enormous amount of work to pull off these events every month! Kudos go out to each and every committee member who plays such an important part.
A running joke among this all-volunteer committee has been that, in addition to "First Thursdays," they should add "Leftover Fridays." And thanks to Cultural Arts Committee volunteer, Betty Wheeler, these "Friday Leftovers" have come to fruition in the form of some additional Cultural Arts events for the Del Mar Community.
This past January the San Diego Bluegrass Society and Del Mar Foundation joined together to bring a bit of bluegrass to the Del Mar Powerhouse Community Center. Again "Friday Leftovers" will be held on March 21 as the Infamous Stringdusters will take the Powerhouse by storm! This young band has just been named Emerging Artist of the Year by the International Bluegrass Music Association, also winning Album of the Year and Song of the Year awards. Returning to San Diego after smashing performances at Summergrass in 2006, and now signed to Sugar Hill Records, you won't want to miss this high-energy bluegrass performance. Join us on March 21st for "Friday Leftovers!" Tickets are $20 and available online. Surf to www.summergrass.net/id58.html for online purchase and mail order info.
