DEL MAR TIMES

Foundation takes stock at year end

By Lynn Gaylord

This is the time of year at the Del Mar Foundation when we begin taking stock of what happened this year in the community, what worked, what didn't, what needs improvement, and how we might serve the citizens of Del Mar better. We encourage your input and even rely on it.

Our "First Thursdays" lecture and music evenings we must assume are a success as they sell out every year. My wish to Santa is that he magically places more seating possibilities down at the Powerhouse so we might accommodate more interested people. Our only solution, short of a surprise from Santa, is to offer more individually arranged events like the upcoming Bluegrass evening with Grammy-award winning artists, "Phillips, Grier & Flinner." In case you have not signed up, check out www.DelMarFoundation.org for details. Or you may call the Foundation at 481-0580. Many, many thanks to all the hard working people on the Cultural Arts Committee who have made this possible.

The Children's Committee of the Foundation has been so active this year it would be tough to itemize what they have done. Summer Luaus, family picnics, Bingo nights, Halloween parades, cards to servicemen overseas, a Beethoven afternoon at the Powerhouse, and even our first Independence Day Parade in Del Mar, are all part of what this energetic group of moms and dads have been up to this year. Hats off to this committee for an unbelievable season.

We tried for our second straight year in conjunction with the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club to provide some fun with public art in what we call "Payasada" or loosely translated, "HorsePlay." Many of you saw these wonderfully painted and adorned horses throughout downtown Del Mar this past summer and commented on how much fun they were. Several hundred of you bought a ticket to tour beachfront residences to see these great works on display which helped to offset the costs of this endeavor. We are in need of volunteers and sponsors for this committee so if you have any interest in displaying a horse or working to make this happen, please contact us on line by clicking "Payasada" at www.DelMarFoundation.org .

What the Del Mar Foundation is probably best known for is our Summer Twilight Concerts in the Park.. Held usually once a month from June through September, we try to pick four great bands to bring to the community for your enjoyment. We charge nothing for these events but offer picnic dinners and raffle prizes to offset the costs. With costs rising every year from porta-potty rentals, sound equipment, and band fees, it is getting tougher and tougher to do. It just couldn't have been done this year without a grant from Pam Slater and the County Board of Supervisors. We thank Pam from the bottom of our hearts for all that she has done for the arts and the environment in our community.

Giving financial support to worthwhile community projects has been very much a part of who we are at the Foundation. We hear from the community about good ideas and then we try to give money and time to these efforts. The beautiful mosaic wall at the Del Mar Library is a good example of this. A project for 3rd graders to videotape Del Mar's history for use in the classroom is another. A Walking Map of Del Mar to try and promote business in our downtown area should prove to be a very useful marketing tool. Our ongoing support of the Del Mar Lifeguards was hugely helped this year by an idea which came from the paddleboard community in southern California. Why not hold a paddleboard race for all ages as part of the end of summer picnic? We did and what a success it was with hundreds of participants of all ages from all over. Three cheers to the race organizers for this event.

So why might we need your help? Well, we need the community's help in many ways. We need your ideas. We need your volunteer time if you would like to become involved. We need your financial support. At this time of year we are asking that you send whatever dollar amount you can afford to help us with our mission at the Del Mar Foundation. Your contributions are a vital part of who we are and what we are able to do. We really do need you. Without your support, our programs and especially our summer concerts would be drastically cut back. Checks in any amount are very much appreciated. If you would like to contact us, there are many ways. We thank you very much in advance for your help.
