20 Years of Concerts in the Park

By Lynn Gaylord

This summer marks the 20th year that The Del Mar Foundation is organizing concerts for the community to enjoy. If the June 24th concert is any indication of their popularity, we won't be out of business for a long time! The local garage band, Chaos Theory, did a fine job of keeping us dancing to their classic rock and roll covers with plenty of young groupies chanting the familiar lyrics. Many thanks to all of you in the community for your support of these concerts with your purchase of raffle tickets and picnic dinners.

It was quite a thrill recently to sit down with "Del Mar Looking Back" and look at old photos from 1983 of neighbors coming together in Seagrove Park for some of the first concerts. Toting their picnic baskets and lawn chairs, everyone was there to be with their neighbors and hear good music. I mused to myself that not much has changed over the years except the numbers of people. Well, maybe the clothes and hairstyles too. Remember those great lambchop sideburns on men and bouffant hairstyles for women!

"The concerts in Seagrove Park were much simpler 20 years ago though," says Don Terwilliger who was born and raised in Del Mar, a Del Mar Foundation Board member and former President of the Del Mar Historical Society. "There were maybe 100 - 200 neighbors sitting on the lawn, just locals. It was a new happening for Del Mar to have these concerts. Parking wasn't a problem either."

Oh well, so much for the good old days..

Particularly astounding to me though was to read the names of the musicians performing back in 1983 at the concerts: Mark Lessman, Peter Sprague, the Mar Dels and other now well-known Del Marians. Back then they were "just kids." Mark and Peter recently did a "First Thursdays" concert in the Powerhouse, this time with families in tow! Pretty cute scene if I may say so myself. And, needless to say, everyone still has a great time with the popular band, the Mar Dels. I danced my silly head off to the Mar Dels at last week's Del Mar Lifeguard Benefit at L'Auberge. Rock On, Mar Dels!

So don't forget your blanket and chairs for the next Del Mar Foundation Twilight Concert on July 22 when the Heroes play in Powerhouse Park at 7 PM. If you would like a picnic dinner for four plus wine catered by Pacifica Del Mar and Sbicca, please send your donation of $150 to The Del Mar Foundation, P.O. Box 2913, Del Mar, CA. 92014. Please remember to include your name, phone number, and address. Any questions, please call (858) 404-0580. See you there!

Lynn Gaylord is President of The Del Mar Foundation and definitely makes life easier for herself on these concert nights with a catered picnic basket!
