The Foundation brings Shakespeare to the Plaza

By Lynn Gaylord

On Tuesday evening, August 5, the Del Mar Foundation invites you to an evening of great food and exciting theater. We hope you can come!

Starting at 5:30 p.m. with a sign-in at Il Fornaio Restaurant, there will be delicious appetizers ranging from calamaretti fritte and bruschettine assortite, to Italian meatballs. For those who are vegetarian there will be bruschetta pomodoro, eggplant roll-ups with goat cheese and insalata caprese. Along with ice tea, a no-host bar will serve whatever you choose.

Beginning at 7:00 p.m. we will stroll over to the back courtyard of the Plaza where New Village Arts Theater Company will perform Shakespeare's zaniest comedy, A Midsummer Night's Dream. New Village Arts was awarded the 2001 KPBS award for theater excellence as "the most exciting new theater company." Besides, what better way to enjoy a summer's evening than with four feuding couples, some fairies, and a donkey!

According to the theater company's website, this is the play where the delicate balance of the fairy kingdom is undone by the fevered and frantic passion that rules the forest night. Where lovers swoon, where the fairy queen discovers the man of her dreams is a donkey, and the fate of all must be restored by an impish sprite who just can't manage to do anything right.

It is Shakespeare's greatest in my mind!

"I just love to see the arts come to Del Mar. The setting for the play is unique and the artists are so talented," says Mai-Lon Gittelsohn who heads up this project for the Cultural Arts Committee. Chairman of the committee, Chuck Freebern, says, "It is a great opportunity to walk into the village, have a nice light meal, and see Shakespeare in our own Plaza."

The cost for the entire evening is only $35 per person. You may download the reservation form from our website www.DelMarFoundation.org or send your check payable to The Del Mar Foundation, P.O. Box 2913, Del Mar, CA 92014. If you have questions, please call 404-0580.

So come join us. Space is limited so hurry and get your reservation in. This is a wonderful evening to enjoy great food, friends, and exciting theater right in our own backyard. See you there!
