Foundation makes grant to lifeguards

By Lynn Gaylord

Through its granting process, the Del Mar Foundation is committed to making Del Mar a nicer place to live. One of the recipients of our grants this year, and almost every year since we began, is the Del Mar Junior Lifeguard Program.

The Junior Lifeguard Program is designed to give each participant an opportunity to experience the beaches and ocean in a unique way. The Junior Guard One Program (ages 11 - 13) has an emphasis on fun activities. Its orientation is less competitive than the Junior Guard Two Program (ages 14 - 16) which focuses more on lifesaving activities, ocean-centered competition and is physically more demanding. Both groups will learn water safety, first aid, mock rescues, body surfing, paddling, and ocean swimming.

This year the program will expand to 180 participants. Along with the funds received from the Del Mar Foundation, additional monies come from the City of Del Mar and the students themselves. We at the Foundation like to think that the junior lifeguards are actually earning their own money from us as they are the ones who will walk through the crowd at the upcoming Twilight Concerts and ask you if you would like to buy raffle tickets. Please dig deeply into your pockets for this very worthy cause and win a chance at some great pri¡zes. Raffle sales begin at 5:30 p.m. and prizes include a night and dinner at the Torrey Pines Hilton, Day at the Races passes, Padre tickets, Jake's and Brigantine gift certificates, and passes to the San Diego Zoo and Wild Animal Park.

Concert Schedule

Tuesday, June 24, 7 pm Chaos Theory (classic rock and roll)

Tuesday, July 22, 7 pm The Heroes (oldies but goodies)

Tuesday, August 19, 7 pm Island Fever (you get it!)

Sunday, September 14, 4 pm Tim Flannery & Friends

The Lifeguards help the Del Mar Foundation in so many ways. As part of the city's Community Services Department, they have charge of the Powerhouse Community Center. It is this fine group of workers who help us set up each month for the popular First Thursdays Concert and Lecture Series. Head of the lifeguards, Pat Vergne and his staff, are also the ones responsible for helping with all the Foundation's Children's Committee activities at the Powerhouse throughout the year. I am sure everyone remembers the lifeboat rides for the youngsters at Marine Exploration Day. Their work is never done! Many, many thanks to you all!

One way that we can all show our appreciation to our lifeguards is by supporting the annual Lifeguard Dance to be held at L'Auberge on Sunday June 29 from 6 - 10 PM. This event kicks off the summer and is a wonderful time to enjoy great music by the Mar Dels and to bid on everything from trips, to surfboards, to scuba diving lessons. The price is $15 in advance and $20 at the door. Information regarding tickets may be obtained by calling 755-1556. Proceeds go toward lifeguard gear, education, outreach in the schools, do's and don'ts at the beach, coloring books for children on water safety and a lot more. It is a really fun evening. See you there!
