Cultural Arts concludes "First Thursdays 2002-2003"

By Lynn Gaylord

This Thursday evening, June 6th, marks the conclusion of "First Thursdays 2002 - 2003" with a jazz concert featuring Mark Lessman, Peter Sprague, Gunnar Biggs, and Kevin Koch. All four musicians are well-known in Southern California and the concert promises to be a real treat. This is the last of twelve events which have spanned ten months starting in September of 2002.

The Cultural Arts Committee of the Del Mar Foundation was formed in January 2000 with the purpose of bringing the community together through the arts in the newly built Powerhouse Community Center. Every year, the "First Thursdays" series just seems to become more and more successful. I have joked to this all-volunteer committee that, in addition to "First Thursdays," we are going to have to put on "Leftover Fridays." They laughed, but not too hard. It takes an enormous amount of work to pull off these events every month and I think the thought of twice the work might be a little too overwhelming!

So who are these terrific committee members to whom we owe such a round of applause? Chuck Freebern is the new Chairman of the Cultural Arts Committee and an accomplished musician himself. Serving with him to bring "First Thursdays" events to the community are: Charlotte Aladjem, Bev Booher, Martha Brooks, Maria Gardiner, Mai-Lon Gittelsohn, Helen Glaser, Alice Goodkind, Ingrid Hoffmeister, Hannah Hurd, Pat Jacoby, Jo Ann Kilty, Barbara Krystoff-Scott, Claire McGreal, Bill Michalsky, Dick Raack, Shirley Stratman, Stevie Strauss, Don Terwilliger, and Susan Tipton.

Anyone with an interest or an idea for a program is welcomed to join the group. We meet the Wednesday morning after the First Thursday event at 8:45 am in the Powerhouse Community Center. We do not meet during July and August. Just to recap this year in case you missed it:
