"'Tis the Season. And All That Jazz"

By Priscilla L. Fawcett

Resounding holiday spirit pervaded the 1st Thursdays celebration Dec. 2, at St. Peter's Church in Del Mar. Sponsored by the Cultural Arts Committee of the Del Mar Foundation, San Diego North Coast Singers, ensembles Caprice and Capella, propelled a zesty program with vocal enthusiasm and unique accompaniment, including a wood block, jingle bells, glockenspiel, xylophone and triangle plus the expertise of local flutist Rachel Woolf.

Upon greeting the audience, Artistic Director Sally H. Dean stated, "Our mission is to teach global understanding through music." Accordingly, melodic sections reflected changing seasons and cycles of the Universe as Caprice and Capella choirs presented arrangements from cultures around the world: So. Africa, India, native Hawaii, Japan, China and the Americas. Fervent solos and group harmony flourished with a segment of sprightly jazz.

North Coast Singers (NCS) is a dimension of the San Dieguito Performing Arts Association, depending largely on donation and volunteer energy. Serving over 130 young singers, ages 8-18, this organization is dedicated to providing vocal training, choral experience and sequential music education while nurturing self-worth and community values.

NCS has performed at St. Peter's Basilica in Rome, St. John The Divine Cathedral in New York City, the San Diego Symphony and the La Jolla Symphony and chorus.

After the event, Dr. Gerda Zieger, of Landau, Germany, noted, "I so enjoyed the international quality of this good music."
