Hertzberg and Holliday join Del Mar Foundation Board
By Lynn Gaylord
For over twenty years, the Del Mar Foundation has been instrumental in building community in Del Mar. From the ever popular Twilight Summer Concerts to Del Mar Days to First Thursdays, the mission of the Foundation has been to bring the community together and enrich the quality of life for Del Mar and the surrounding area.
Members of the Board of Directors over the years have come from all areas of the surrounding community and are elected to a three-year term with an option for a second term. Individuals are selected based on their involvement in the community and their commitment to bettering Del Mar. There has never been a vacuum of possible folks to sit on this board. We are truly blessed in this community to have such dedicated people willing to serve.
At the March meeting of the Foundation, two new members were elected to this 15-member Board: Joel Holliday and Dick Hertzberg. Both are long-time residents of Del Mar and bring a wealth of expertise. They are both presently serving on the Investment Advisory Committee of the Foundation to oversee the management of the $500,000 Lagoon endowment.
Mr. Holliday is presently President and CEO of the Charles Lee Powell Foundation, a 501c(3) private foundation with over $40 million in assets. He has held that position since 1999, and has been on the board of directors of the foundation since 1993. He was the CFO of Applied Micro Circuits Corporation, a semiconductor firm, from 1981 until his retirement in 1999. His earlier career experience includes being a co-founder and CFO of Spin Physics, Inc. and the Director of Finance during the reorganization of Westgate California Corporation. Joel holds a B.A. from Claremont McKenna College and a MBA from Harvard Business School. He and his wife, Rosanne, have lived in Del Mar since 1973. Long active in the Del Mar community, Joel was a founding member of the Del Mar Foundation in June 1982. We welcome him back on board!
Mr. Hertzberg has been a Del Marian since he and his wife, Carol, moved to the Del Mar community in 1980. Since 1980 he has been the President and CEO of the ENPEX Corporation, a privately held energy development company involved in power plant development related to the energy sector. Prior to founding the ENPEX Corporation he was the Director of the U.S. Dept. of Energy's research and development programs related to petroleum, natural gas, coal mining and underground coal conversion. He also served as the responsible official in the White House Office of Management and Budget for oversight of the nation's fossil energy research and development program. Dick is a graduate of Colgate University and has a graduate degree in chemical engineering from Columbia University. What many of you may remember is that it was Dick Hertzberg's successful perseverance in working with the powers that be to keep the helicopters from flying overhead Del Mar. Now that's commitment to community!
A huge welcome to both members and a most gracious thank you for serving our community all these years.
