Picnic's 40th Anniversary - another memory maker

By Claire McGreal

The Del Mar Foundation will celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the Del Mar Picnic on Sunday, Sept. 12, from noon to 3 p.m. at Powerhouse Park. As a result of last week's article about the Picnic in the Del Mar Times, several people have contacted this writer about capturing some of the memories of Picnics Past. How many readers recall the first Picnic in 1964, or some of the subsequent picnics? How many readers have photos of some of the past picnics? We hope that, if you have memories or photos of past Picnics, you will share them with us. Please send them to the Del Mar Foundation, PO Box 2913, Del Mar, CA 92014. We hope to share these memories in a Memory Book.

For those of you who want to join us this year at the Picnic, the cost is $12 for Adults and $8 for children, payable to the Del Mar Foundation at the above address. We will enjoy a lunch of chicken, hamburgers and hotdogs grilled on BBQ fired by red oak. There will be lots of games, races and crafts for the children, and bocce and volleyball for Adults. Del Mar Community Connections will serve the famous Del Mar lemon cakes for desert. In addition, we have invited Del Mar TV, Del Mar Historical Society, Friends of the Library and Friends of the Powerhouse to join us at the Picnic, to share their information with the public.

Don't forget to register for the Powerhouse Paddleboard Race on Sept. 12 at The adult race starts at 8 a.m., with teen race to follow. Take your coffee to the Park to enjoy watching the start of the race. At 4 p.m., also on Sept. 12, Tim Flannery and Friends will regale us with his Bluegrass renditions at the final Twilight Concert at the Park.

We are sharing here some of the photos taken at last year's Picnic. Can you find yourself? Will you be in the photos of Picnic 2004?
